New Technology in NSC-Production

Why is Weserland banking on a technological change in production for its latex foam gelling agent, Suprogel NSC?

We used to give our organisation's "old mills" lavish care and attention in the firm belief that – due to the outstanding grinding and distribution produced – the "milling" of sodium silico fluoride with ceramic balls in so-called ball mills meant the very best for our product. Our customers were satisfied and our Suprogel NSC was indispensable for the manufacture of latex foams for carpets and mattresses. Especially for mattress operations, however, requirements became ever greater, and the grinding time therefore substantially longer. Attempts to attain the degrees of fineness and distribution then necessary quickly pushed the ball mill technology near its limits.

In the spring of 2004 we were then befallen by a worst-case scenario for our company; two of our three ball mills developed "signs of disintegration". Repairing them would have been extremely expensive, and the results would not have been guaranteed on any lasting basis.

Although earlier attempts with continuous bead mills had turned out negatively, but Weserland had actually obtained very good results with a bead mill of a different design from the Lehmann company, the question was whether there was an alternative after all. So, off we were to Lehmann in the town of Aalen.

The result of those tests were as hoped this bead mill ground NSF, producing even better figures than those obtained by the "old" ball mill; and with just two milling courses required to do so!

This was marvellous, but then the question was posed as to whether a product like Suprogel NSC would bear such a substantial new investment. The solution was an automatic production run of the two milling courses required, without tying up any personnel. The planning and execution of this production control system was realised at Weserland as usual under our direct control together with tried and trusted companies.

The results to the advantage of our customers are:
  • Daily capacity of at least six tons of finished product

  • Improvement and consistency of product quality

  • Standardisation of the Suprogel product assortment

  • Price constancy through cost savings
